Underground River from El Nido – or should you go from Puerto Princesa?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 5 min read
Visit the Underground River from Puerto Princesa if you can place it before or after El Nido. Doing it as a return day trip from El Nido adds a long road journey to an activity that already involves registration, a boat transfer and a timed cave visit. It is possible only when a current operator explicitly sells that departure and confirms the full schedule; it is rarely the best use of a short El Nido stay.
Why the starting point matters
Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park lies near Sabang, north-west of Puerto Princesa and well south of El Nido. The UNESCO-listed park protects a limestone landscape and an underground river whose lower section is influenced by the tide. Visitor boats enter only part of the cave system; the protected area is much larger than the short navigable experience.
From Puerto Princesa, the usual excursion already occupies most of a day. From El Nido, the road transfer comes before and after that programme. Traffic, road conditions, registration queues, sea conditions at Sabang and the allocated cave slot can all affect the finish time. A headline saying “Palawan Underground River” does not prove that pickup is in El Nido.
The better itinerary
If your trip arrives through Puerto Princesa, spend a night there, take the Underground River excursion, then continue north to El Nido. Reversing that order also works. This avoids driving the same stretch twice and protects your island-hopping days in Bacuit Bay.
When comparing transport, check the actual pickup point and final drop-off. Shared vans are convenient but make passenger and luggage stops; a private car gives more control but does not shorten the island’s roads. If you want your own vehicle, compare car hire for El Nido and Palawan, then confirm permitted pickup and return locations, road cover, deposit, CDW and excess with the rental company.
What a tour must state
Before paying, look for five separate items: pickup location, Underground River permit or visitor registration, road transport, the Sabang boat transfer and the cave boat. Also check lunch, terminal or environmental fees and the return point. If a permit is not explicitly included, ask who obtains it and what happens if no slot is available.
The guided Underground River day trip in the available selection begins in Puerto Princesa, not El Nido. That makes it useful for a split stay but misleading as evidence of an El Nido departure.
When to skip it
Skip the detour when you have only two or three full days in El Nido, dislike long road days or are already visiting another show cave. The Underground River is a major protected landscape, but it is not “another El Nido lagoon”: much of the experience is logistics and waiting, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Choose it when the cave itself matters enough to shape the Palawan route. Put it beside Puerto Princesa, obtain written confirmation of every transfer and permit, and leave El Nido’s limited days for the places reached from El Nido.
